Theatre to host St. Patty’s dance

Theatre to host St. Patty’s dance

The Big Island community is invited to a St. Patrick’s Dance at the Honokaa People’s Theatre on Saturday, March 17.

Both new and experienced dancers are welcome, and a free dance lesson is included in the $10 cover charge.

The event will start at 6:30 p.m. with an intro to West Coast Swing class taught by Michelle Suber, followed by open dancing from 7:30-10:30 p.m. The doors open at 6:15 p.m. and dancers should arrive on time in order to participate in the lesson. Anyone arriving after the lesson begins may sit in the theatre and observe.

“This event is a great opportunity for people to get a taste for West Coast Swing,” Suber said. “It’s also a chance to see experienced dancers interpreting music and building on the fundamental elements they’ve refined over time. West Coast Swing, long known as a dancer’s dance, relies on an alert, strong relationship with both the music and your dance partner. It is also incredibly good fun!”

No experience is necessary to start dancing. Wear smooth-soled shoes and comfortable clothing for easy movement. Pizza from Cafe il Mondo and other light refreshments will be available for purchase.

For more information, contact Suber at 887-1210 or michellesuber@mac.com.

Green Waste pickup to change

Residential green waste collection will change from Saturdays to Sundays. The last Saturday collection will be March 31 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. On Sunday, April 1, and on Sundays thereafter, green waste will be collected during normal operating hours, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Puako Transfer Station is not permitted to accept green waste from commercial haulers. Only residential users may legally dump green waste at the facility. Residential loads are limited to one per day and must be no larger than five cubic feet which is approximately the size of an eight-foot pickup truck bed filled to the height of the cab.

Normal operating hours for rubbish collection at the Puako Transfer Station will continue to be 6 a.m.-6 p.m., Sunday, Tuesday and Friday.

In West Hawaii, commercial haulers and residents may still dispose of green waste without charge at the green waste facility at the Kealakehe Recycling and Transfer Station.

The competition is held annually at high schools throughout the United States, and according to poetryoutloud.org, “encourages the nation’s youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation” and “helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence and learn about their literary heritage.”

Parker Junior Paul Gregg came in second place, and sophomore Nondi Lampkin and seniors Thomas Baldwin, Jesse Tarnas and Victoria Andrade-McKeehan all tied for third place.

Wharton will fly to Oahu to compete at the state competition on Sunday. For more information, visit parkershool.net.
